Just found out that my department will be conducting a tenure-track search for the position I have this coming year rather than the following year as originally scheduled.

That means my contract will not be extended for a second year. It could mean that after this year I will finally obtain that coveted tenure-track position, but there's absolutely no guarantee that I will be successful with this particular job.

I think I actually would have preferred a 2-year contract...there's some security and comfort. Now the situation is risky again. Especially with PGT at NYU for probably 2 years rather than one.

That sucks. You have worked so hard to get this far--you deserve to have your tenure-track/security now, as far as I am concerned!

I could be being unnecessarily pessimistic about things though.... But, then again, these are the trials and tribulations of academia. I don't think I would be this uneasy had PGT not been in NYC for certain.

So, you just go and be yourself and dazzle them! Your students will love you, be your best self with your department secretary, and genial with the rest of the faculty. If they have half a brain they'll know you are the one!

Wow. They pulled the rug out from under you, just like that, when you thought you would have a breather for a year? (if I understand the situation right?) I hope this turns into an amazingly good thing, with you finding a permanent home a year earlier than you would have otherwise.

Coordinating academic stuff with other people's academic stuff sucks. There should just be one great big college in one city.

Well, they were hoping they would be able to move the search up a year; I knew that from the start. In a way I was hoping that it wouldn't happen...ya know, give me a second year to get my feet wet?

I suppose there's probably a good chance I'll walk away with the tenure track position anyway, but the uncertainty sucks (not that you don't know all about that yourself!). And yes, I think the worst part about all this is coordinating with PGT's own academic pursuits...which wasn't even an issue a month ago. I agree with the one college in one city, as long as that city isn't in Texas. ;)

well, maybe you'll score the post. They probably hired you thinking that you would be a great choice for a tenure track. It's a good launch pad even if you don't ultimately stay your whole life there.

I so agree with this... You're a wonderful teacher, you should do fine!
